Description
Staffing needs in the emergency department may be determined by several factors, including volume, acuity, and length of stay of ED patients, as well as facility characteristics such as STEMI, trauma, or stroke designation, teaching status, and the population served by the institution. While inpatient units, with a designated level of care and often limited patient population, may identify staffing needs by nurse-to-patient ratios, these ratios are ineffective when addressing ED staffing needs (Rogers, 2021).
