Description
Change in the ED is necessary and inevitable to drive high quality, safe patient care. Change efforts may be undertaken in response to policy and legislative changes, new technologies and equipment, new and retired processes and procedures, capital projects, hospital redevelopment and growth, and changes in the composition of our patients and their expectations. Approximately two-thirds of changes fail in health care settings, and even successful changes may impact job satisfaction, stress, intention to leave, and the way staff work together. With such high stakes, change efforts require strategic planning and a structured approach with careful consideration of the plan, the results, and the consequences, including accommodations for the unanticipated effects.
To effectively lead change, ED leaders must build their personal knowledge and accountability for their strengths and limitations, their technical ability, and their understanding of the essence of change and innovation concepts and the tools of change. Successful change requires a deliberate, planned, and systematic approach. This course will introduce ED leaders to the fundamentals of change management and some of the basic tools that are useful to plan and execute changes.
