Description
Why does ED Throughput get so much attention and what makes it important to our patients and staff other than as a convenience factor? This is an important question as we analyze the impact of ED throughput and understand the patient outcomes associated with protracted throughput. The Joint Commissions’ Patient Flow Standard 04.03.11 in the Leadership Chapter includes nine elements of performance that hold organizational leaders accountable for addressing system wide throughput issues that contribute to ED crowding and boarding. What we’ll learn is that ED crowding is costly, compromises care quality and community trust, and can largely be mitigated by managing patient flow to unlock operational excellence in your emergency department.

To highlight evidence based best practices in throughput, this course breaks the throughput process down into three tollgates for ED throughput to include input (patients coming in), throughput (patients in process), and output (patients leaving the ED via admission, discharge, or transfer). Delays in any one of these variables can and will derail the other two throughput intervals, resulting in global barriers to flow.
