Description

Federal, local government, and civilian emergency response teams undergo rigorous training on the response level duties during disasters following the National Incident Management System (NIMS). This training ensures streamlined, efficient, and safe operations at the scene of the disaster, rooted in a common incident command structure (Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA], 2021). With the crux of the training focused on what response level providers provide and how it leaves a delta in the educational role of the in-department clinician during such disasters. Focusing on the duties, roles, and responsibilities of the bedside clinician in the emergency department during these atypical events can ensure the influx of new patients integrates fluidly with the care of the current patient load unaffected by the disaster.
