The course begins with a review of the purpose of a data-driven approach to ED operations, including throughput metrics, dashboards, and published benchmarks to unlock operational performance; discussions of how to use effective communication and relationship-building skills, and a review of the safety “must-haves” that impact patients and clinicians.

Section two provides information on methods to find and retain knowledgeable, competent, and committed staff; explores staffing models that provide safe staffing and staff satisfaction and identifies approaches to provide a healthy work environment in collaboration with staff.

The concluding section is a review of key strategies related to the development role of the nurse manager: building relationships, communication skills, conflict management, change management, time management, charge nurse development, and succession planning.
