This course equips emergency department nurses with essential strategies to effectively manage the care of medical-surgical, critical care, psychiatric, pediatric, and step-down/progressive care patients while they are awaiting transfer or inpatient bed placement. The course emphasizes the development of comprehensive assessment skills tailored to the unique needs of boarded patients, fostering critical thinking and prioritization to promptly identify changes in patient conditions. Emergency department nurses will learn to manage diverse patient needs, including common medical conditions, and care of this specific population, while identifying safety concerns and applying evidence-based practices to reduce risks such as falls, infections, and emotional distress.
