The SteriPath Micro blood culture collection system reduces false positive blood cultures by diverting and sequestering the initial 0.6 to 0.9 milliliters of blood, preventing skin contaminants, when present, from entering blood culture bottles. The following video tutorial demonstrates proper use of SteriPath Micro with integrated syringe used with a peripheral IV start. Collect the necessary supplies, including SteriPath Micro, in the lure configuration. Perform skin surface antisepsis according to your institution's established guidelines. While skin antisepsis is air drying, thoroughly disinfect bottle top with an alcohol prep pad. Scrub for 15 seconds, let air dry, and leave a new pad on top of the bottle. Open SteriPath Micro, keeping the device on sterile package, to prevent contamination. Open blood transfer device, keeping the device on sterile package. Ensure site is completely dry. Insert IV catheter and secure site. After connecting SteriPath Micro to IV catheter, slowly and steadily draw syringe plunger to divert the initial specimen of blood into diversion chamber. Monitor blood flow into the diversion chamber until it is full. Fully depress button on side of diversion device to lock in potential contaminants. Continue drawing syringe plunger to collect blood culture sample following standard procedure. After collecting blood culture specimens, clamp line prior to disconnecting the syringe. Immediately attach blood transfer device to reduce touchpoint contamination. Continue with additional specimens for blood work. Using aseptic technique, place blood transfer device with syringe and inoculate bottle. Transfer blood from syringe to the bottle using bottle's vacuum. Do not depress plunger of syringe. Fill the culture bottle according to institution policy. Gently agitate the bottle several times to prevent clotting. Follow hospital guidelines for inoculation of second bottle, if required. Inoculate any additional samples for blood work. Dispose of supplies according to institution policy.
Video Summary
The video tutorial demonstrates how to use the SteriPath Micro blood culture collection system, which reduces false positive blood cultures by diverting and sequestering the initial blood sample to prevent contamination. The steps include collecting necessary supplies, performing skin antisepsis, disinfecting the bottle top, and inserting an IV catheter. The initial specimen is drawn into the diversion chamber, and the blood culture sample is collected following standard procedure. The blood is transferred to the culture bottle using a blood transfer device, and additional specimens can be collected for blood work. The video emphasizes following hospital guidelines and disposing of supplies properly.
