Pdf Summary
This document is a structured skills checklist for trauma nursing students, based on the Emergency Nurses Association trauma nursing process. It outlines how to assess and manage a trauma patient from arrival through secondary survey, reassessment, and disposition.

The process begins with preparation and triage: activating the team, preparing the trauma room, and using appropriate PPE. The primary survey follows the C-ABC approach and then the ABCDE sequence: checking for uncontrolled bleeding, airway status with cervical spine stabilization, breathing effectiveness, circulation and shock, neurologic status using GCS and pupil assessment, and exposure with temperature control. For each step, the document lists what to observe and possible interventions such as hemorrhage control, airway adjuncts, intubation support, chest decompression, fluid resuscitation, and warming measures.

It then includes gathering full vital signs, involving family, and applying the LMNOP framework: lab studies, monitoring, nasogastric/orogastric tube consideration, oxygenation and capnography, pain assessment, and comfort measures. The checklist also prompts consideration of analgesia and whether definitive care or transfer to trauma, surgical, or critical care services is needed.

The secondary survey focuses on history and a head-to-toe physical assessment, including inspection and palpation of the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, perineum, extremities, and posterior surfaces, along with lung and heart auscultation. It also addresses urinary output measurement and pelvic stability checks.

The final sections require identification of at least three likely interventions or diagnoses, continued reassessment of vital signs, injuries, pain, and primary survey findings, and planning for definitive care or transfer. The document ends with performance criteria for successful completion of the skills station.
