Pdf Summary
This Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) focuses on the effectiveness of screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) in the emergency department and the implementation of appropriate interventions. IPV is a serious public health concern that can result in numerous long-term negative physical and psychological effects. The CPG highlights the use of screening tools such as the Hurt, Insult, Threaten, and Scream (HITS), Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST), Partner Violence Screen (PVS), Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS), and the STaT screening tools, which can be used in clinical settings. While these screening efforts may increase the identification of IPV survivors, they do not reduce the rate of IPV.

Computerized screening is found to be a safe, efficient, and effective way to screen for IPV in the emergency department. Education and experience are necessary for healthcare providers to feel comfortable screening for IPV in healthcare settings. Therefore, the CPG recommends a multifaceted approach to IPV in the emergency department, including screening, referrals, and interventions, in order to have an effective IPV program.

The level of recommendation for the different interventions is categorized as Level A (High), Level B (Moderate), Level C (Weak), N/R (Not recommended), I/E (Insufficient evidence), or N/E (No evidence). The CPG is based on rigorous systematic review and critical analysis of the literature to provide evidence-based recommendations for emergency nursing practice.

The purpose of the CPG is to positively impact patient care in emergency nursing by bridging the gap between practice and currently available evidence. It is important for healthcare providers to be knowledgeable about IPV and to have effective screening and intervention strategies in place to support survivors.
