Pdf Summary
Recent reports have drawn attention to the high rates of suicide among military and veteran populations in the US, prompting efforts to identify more effective prevention measures. One aspect of suicide prevention that has been highlighted is the use of public communications. However, messaging about military and veteran suicide often does not support suicide prevention goals and is inconsistent. There is a need for strategic, science-based messaging guidance in this area. This article provides key findings from relevant research that offer lessons for creating safe and effective messages. Efforts should focus on reducing stigma, promoting help-seeking behaviors, normalizing mental health issues, and providing resources for support. Additionally, messaging should address the fact that suicide is a preventable public health issue and emphasize that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. The importance of media coverage is also highlighted, emphasizing the need for accurate reporting that promotes positive prevention messages and avoids sensationalism. Overall, a coordinated and consistent approach to messaging is necessary to support and enhance suicide prevention efforts among military and veteran populations.
